AR wants to integrate into the virtual world, there is still a long way to go

Talking about AR, VR, or MR at this juncture is an outdated topic in the eyes of most people. Not fire is reality, but before last night, I myself never completely gave up my expectations of AR.

The reason that supports my expectations so far is the "most mysterious startup company in history" Magic Leap, which is also a company that claims to use "light field" technology to change the world. And just last night, Magic Leap finally officially launched the developer version of its first product, Magic Leap One, and was "released" at the same time. There were also a few foreign media actual product experience evaluation results.

AR wants to integrate into the virtual world, there is still a long way to go

The reporter said this:

In contrast, the summary given by The Verge's reporter is more "deadly":

Although not all reporters who have experienced the new products directly give "bad reviews" like The Verge reporters, it is enough to explain the problem of Magic Leap One-it is still a long way from truly mastering the light field display technology.

Perhaps, it's really time to give up expectations for AR.

Why did you have expectations for Magic Leap?

Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz, who once appeared on the cover of Forbes

The first thing to mention is the "demon" of Magic Leap. As early as 2015 and 2016, it has always been the darling of reports in the science and technology community because it really does not follow the "routine".

The first is a set of financing records that are too gorgeous to be gorgeous, and the amount is too large to dare to think higher:

A simple addition, the total financing amount of the four financings reached a staggering US$1.887 billion, which is about 12.9 billion yuan in RMB.

The key is that this series of figures are all achieved on the basis of products that are far away (at least in that year), and other competitors in the industry mainly use mature technologies.

But then a more tangled question comes, why do the world's top Internet companies, top investment banks, etc. have such high expectations for it? The answer is actually two words-light field.

Humans have been suffering from flat reality technology for a long time, and currently only cruel

Across the entire PC and smart phone era, the virtual world constructed by various computers is transmitted through two-dimensional planar image information. But as computers become more and more powerful, computers have actually been able to create extremely complex virtual worlds, including some artificially constructed virtual worlds that are very close to the real world.

The best example of this is a lot of games, when the special effects are all on, take a picture, you even have to look twice to recognize that it is not real.

To put it another way, when the monitor displays the virtual world, it also loses most of the data, because even if you can track a considerable number of "virtual light" with billions of transistor elements, it will eventually appear in people. What's in front of the eyes is still the parallel rays of the flat two-dimensional pixelated display.

This is true for the virtual world, and it is also true for people. Taking all current VR devices as an example, the basic principle is to display different 2D images (closer to flat light) in the left and right eyes, allowing the brain to use the images to form a sense of space (illusion). In contrast, the human eye usually captures the actual light, and when the human eye looks at objects at different distances, the eye will continue to zoom (the lens focal length determines which distance of the object can be seen clearly).

The embarrassing result appeared, because VR has a sense of reality (illusion) at the beginning, and the objects and scenes in it will change, so the human eye is actually repeating the muscle action of "trying to focus", but in fact, almost all VR devices It is impossible to adjust the secondary focus of the screen content according to the eye activity. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

In actual use, this shortcoming has caused many users to experience dizziness when wearing VR devices for a long time, which indirectly limits the length of time users can use VR devices to less than tens of minutes. Greatly obstruct the single length of time that people are immersed in the virtual world.

The situation of AR is slightly different, but 2D display technology also has to be "pot". Monocular devices like Google Glass display too close a focal length. If people switch the focus between the real scene and Google Glass, it is easy to trigger fatigue. And binocular devices like Hololens use more advanced optical lenses to allow the virtual world to be "superimposed" on the real scene, but in principle, the "superimposition" action is actually the same as VR.

On one side are people who have long wanted to rush into the embrace of the virtual world, and on the other side is the highly developed virtual world, with only a display technology "gap" in between.

Judging from the current progress, with thousands of employees and as much as US$1.8 billion in financing, it seems that it is impossible to realize this technology in a short period of time, or even just bring it closer to us.

Magic Leap One, limited but ultimately the strongest AR device at present

Of course, in terms of specific parameters, Magic Leap One is still the strongest AR display device we can currently buy. And from the current commercial feedback from foreign media, in terms of product details such as wearing comfort, battery life, performance, and use, Magic Leap One has achieved a considerable height.

And in terms of specific parameters, it is indeed much better than Microsoft's Hololens, and at the same time it is nearly 20% cheaper than the latter in price. If the later developers can keep up, it is indeed the most cost-effective AR device.

As for when the "gap" between the virtual and the reality mentioned in the article can be eliminated, it is basically impossible to see the progress of the light field in less than a decade. Even the road of "simulating light" itself will not work, but to take more complicated routes such as "machine brain", which will take longer.

In short, there is still a long way to go if you want to integrate into the virtual world.
