Philips Lumileds is optimistic about the LED market

At the 2007 International Symposium on Solid State Lighting in Taiwan, Frank Steranka, Executive Vice President of R&D at Philips Lumileds, was optimistic about the prospects for the LED market in the coming years due to strong demand for LEDs in the handheld, automotive, digital camera and lighting markets.

Steranka said that 2007 will be the year in which LEDs began to develop in the lighting market. As LED manufacturers continue to explore more advanced technologies, LEDs featuring 100lm/W are expected to debut next year. In the next 3-4 years, the performance of LED products on the market may reach 150lm / W (LED's current light efficiency is around 80-85lm / W).

Lumileds has been developing LED-related automotive products for a long time. The company will introduce new products for headlights in 2008 and has already cooperated with some automotive companies (such as Audi) in this field. As for the LCD TV backlight market, due to the huge price difference between CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp, LCD TV's mainstream backlight) and LED, Steranka estimates that LED can only be larger in this field in 2009 or 2008. Progress.
