Sharp JDI force! Competing Apple OLED orders with Samsung

In the small-size OLED market, Samsung has an absolute leading position. Currently, it has monopolized more than 90% of the market share. Such a situation of large size makes other manufacturers sit still. It is reported that Foxconn's Sharp and Japanese display panel maker Japan Display (JDI) are preparing to break this situation, and the beginning is to compete for Apple's OLED panel orders. In addition to Sharp and JDI, Korean panel maker LG Display has also begun to develop small-size OLED panels.

Sharp, JDI will compete for Apple OLED orders

At the end of last year, Apple released the first iPhone X mobile phone using OLED screen models. Samsung has no doubt become the only OLED screen supplier for Apple, because only Samsung's small-sized OLED panel can reach Apple's standard. However, Samsung is limited by its production capacity, and it is also required to ensure the supply of screens for its own mobile phones to meet Apple's order demand. Therefore, it was also reported that LG Display will become Apple's second OLED panel supplier.

Sharp is also actively developing small-sized OLED panels

It is reported that Apple will launch two different sizes of OLED models this year, so in addition to Samsung and LG Display, other manufacturers also have access to Apple's orders. As we all know, Sharp is currently building OLED panel production lines, and is expected to achieve mass production in the second quarter of this year. In addition to competing with Apple OLED orders, Sharp may also have OLED screens for its own smartphones.

JDI has now received the Japanese Government’s bailout

In addition to Sharp, Japan's JDI is also expected to join the competition. Before the funding problem, JDI was not in a better position, but currently JDI has received a total of 636 million U.S. dollars from the Japanese government. Using this money, JDI will also start building OLED panel production lines and begin to compete for Apple orders. On the previous LCD screen, JDI and Apple had already established a good cooperation.

With LG Display, Sharp, and JDI energetically developing small-sized OLED panels, the competitive pressure Samsung faces will also increase.
