Beat Tesla? Australia builds world's largest battery energy storage system

(Original title: Beating Tesla! Australia will build the world's largest battery energy storage system)

Australia will build the world’s largest solar energy and battery energy storage system in the southern Riverland region, with a scale of 100MWh.

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power often require energy storage systems corresponding to them to store unusable power and avoid waste. As a typical energy storage method, battery energy storage has not been used on a large scale due to its limited cost.

We take the example of a representative storage power station, the Sendai substation in Japan. The project has a 40 MWh battery capacity and uses lithium batteries for power storage. Earlier, the media reported on Tesla's 80MWh energy storage system in Southern California, considering it to be the world's largest energy storage system.

However, there are already regions that can't wait to break this record. Recently, according to the British Guardian, Australia will build the world's largest solar energy and battery energy storage system in the southern Riverland region, with a scale of 100 MWh.

The total investment of the project will exceed 1 billion U.S. dollars, and the funds will all come from private investors; and the project will build private shrubs in the Morgan area from the woodland. The entire solar energy and battery energy storage system is provided by the supplier Lyon Group, which consists of more than 3.4 million solar panels and 1.1 million batteries. It goes without saying that the combination of solar power and battery storage will greatly increase the power storage capacity in southern Australia.

According to the plan, the installed capacity of the entire Riverland system is 330MW, and the battery storage system stores 100MWh of electricity. The Governor of the State, Jay Weatherill, said, “Similar renewable energy projects represent future forms of energy use.”

This project will undoubtedly bring great benefits to the environment. David Green, a partner at Lyon, believes that “the large-scale use of solar energy and battery storage is very meaningful for reducing CO2 emissions. Any short-sighted decision is not desirable to us.”

According to Lyon, the project will begin construction in a few months and will be operational by the end of this year. At the same time, the company will also build another similar project in the Roxby Downs area.
