South Korea pushes domestic AMOLED equipment self-sufficiency rate toward 80%

In 2011, Korea’s OLED capital expenditure will be 5.9 trillion won (about 5.2 billion US dollars), and in 2012 will see 8 trillion won (about 7.2 billion US dollars).

About 70% of Korea's OLED capital expenditure is used for equipment investment. In order to reduce the level of overseas equipment factories, the Korean equipment factory has accumulated its technical capabilities in the semiconductor and LCD fields and actively entered the AMOLED field.

According to the AMOLED process, Korea has been able to supply TFT arrays, organic vapor deposition, packaging, Cell and other process equipment. In order to enhance the Korean AMOLED device technology, SMD and LGD not only continue to develop together with Korean equipment manufacturers, but also strengthen mutual cooperation through capital contribution. For example, SNU Precision invested by SMD has developed a large size for the development of AMOLED panels. Vertical vapor deposition equipment, as well as thin film packaging equipment.

With SMD gradually pursuing the purchase of AMOLED equipment from the Korean factory, the self-sufficiency rate of the 5.5-generation line equipment (based on the purchase amount) has also increased to 60%. Not only that, the 8th generation line of LGD construction will also have a 50% equipment self-sufficiency rate. The goal is that the South Korean government will accelerate the self-sufficiency rate of its AMOLED equipment toward 80%. In the future, the new AMOLED production line in South Korea will be significantly reduced.
