Broadcom's new version of InConcert improves Bluetooth Wi-Fi coexistence

Broadcom, the world leader in the wired and wireless communications semiconductor market, announced the launch of a new version of InConcert wireless technology, which achieves the industry's best Bluetooth and Wi-Fi coexistence in netbooks and laptops. The new version of InConcert technology uses an adaptive algorithm that can identify wireless usage to significantly increase the throughput of 802.11n while serving a variety of different Bluetooth devices.

Broadcom effectively integrates Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in a compact, low-power combination chip and module configuration. Broadcom is a pioneer in implementing such integrated solutions. Broadcom's proven architecture reduces the possibility of these two wireless technologies causing wireless interference and reduces the complexity of using these two technologies in netbooks, laptops, and smartphones. InConcert has undergone 4 generations of technological evolution covering mobile phones and mobile computing devices. Among the top 10 equipment manufacturers in the world, 5 of its netbooks or laptops have adopted InConcert technology.

Key points:

· Bluetooth and Wi-Fi have achieved remarkable development since its launch. Bluetooth was first popularized as a wireless hands-free technology in mobile phones, and Wi-Fi has also been widely adopted. Wi-Fi enables laptops to be wirelessly Connect to the Internet.

· Today, people need wireless peripheral devices that can enhance the user experience (such as connecting wireless headsets to achieve VoIP calls). Driven by this demand, Bluetooth has been increasingly used in PCs, especially in the rapidly growing Netbook market. Similarly, the use of Wi-Fi in mobile phones has increased, and once the Wi-Fi Direct standard is approved, Wi-Fi is expected to enter more devices. The increasing use of these two wireless technologies has prompted the need for more advanced mechanisms to enable the two technologies to coexist well.

Basically, the connection requirements of various Bluetooth applications are very different, some require low latency, while others require a predetermined minimum throughput. The Broadcom InConcert coexistence algorithm takes these factors into account, and at the same time, it can meet the needs of various Bluetooth devices in the presence of a Wi-Fi link.

Compared with the previous generation, the new version of InConcert technology has been enhanced in the following aspects to be more suitable for netbook devices (the characteristics of such devices are mobility, unlimited connectivity and scalability):

1) Performance optimization, especially for 802.11n rate;

2) When listening to audio through Bluetooth at the same time, significantly improve Wi-Fi throughput;

3) When using a Bluetooth mouse, it has minimal or no effect on Wi-Fi throughput;

4) Achieve high Wi-Fi throughput while ensuring that the Bluetooth mouse and headset can work together normally.

5) InConcert also incorporates some technologies to enhance some of the most advanced, standards-based functions, such as high-speed transmission based on Bluetooth 3.0 + HS. The problem of coexistence caused by this new standard has been solved simply and clearly. Now it can not only reliably transmit Bluetooth files, but also use wireless peripherals such as mice and stereo headphones.

6) After the Wi-Fi Direct device is put into use in the future, the new version of InConcert technology can also be used to provide a satisfactory user experience, achieving 802.11n data transmission rate between two Wi-Fi Direct devices, while serving a variety of different Bluetooth peripherals. This is especially useful for a complete wireless video streaming experience. In such applications, video is transmitted directly from the computer to the TV via Wi-Fi, while Bluetooth speakers or headphones are used to play and listen to audio.

The new version of InConcert technology and Broadcom's innovative InConcert combination modules (including BCM94312HMGB, BCM943225HMB and BCM943224HMB) have begun to be delivered, and are being delivered to major global netbook and notebook computer manufacturers, and will also be exhibited at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show .

Nambi Seshadri, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Broadcom ’s Mobile and Wireless Connectivity Business Unit: “As Wi-Fi and Bluetooth co-exist in mobile devices become more common, Broadcom continues to innovate to reduce the complexity of these advanced communication systems, This allows device and software developers to more easily develop wireless capabilities for their products. Our InConcert technology can increase the coexistence between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies to a new level for a more enjoyable user experience."
