DOE Releases 10-Year US Lighting Market Change Report

Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy released a report that described changes in the US lighting market over the past decade. The report pointed out that in the past decade, the average energy efficiency of lamps increased by 29%, and the use of lamps increased by 14%.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) pointed out in this latest detailed report that in the past ten years, the domestic installed luminaires in the United States have been heading towards a higher efficiency growth. The average system efficiency has increased from 45 lm/W in 2001 to 2010. 58 lumens/watt.

Ten Years Improvement in Average Fluorescent Efficiency

The average system efficiency of fluorescent lamps increased by 29% over a decade, mainly due to the replacement of incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (energy saving lamps) for residential applications, and the replacement of T12 fluorescent lamps with T8 and T5 fluorescent lamps in commercial and industrial applications.

As can be seen from the figure above, the average system efficacy for residential lighting (19 lm/W) is significantly lower than that for the other three sectors (equal to or higher than 70 lm/W), and the industrial and outdoor average system efficacy is attributed to improvement. Metal halide lamps have replaced mercury lamps.

At the same time, the new construction project in the United States has also increased the total number of luminaire installations by 14%, and the total number of luminaire installations has increased from 7 billion in 2001 to 8 billion in 2010. The growth is mainly concentrated in the residential sector, which not only reflects the number of houses. The increase also shows that the continuous expansion of the residential area requires more lamps.

Commercial and residential lighting accounts for 75% of the total market

In 2010, the American lighting market characterization report pointed out that lighting consumption is 700 TWh, accounting for about 19% of the total electricity consumption in the United States, of which, commercial lighting consumption accounts for nearly half of the total consumption (349 TWh). This is largely due to the fact that fluorescent lighting dominates.

Although the lighting used in residential lighting is more, the power consumption is only 175 TWh because of the use of incandescent lamps and their daily use less than commercial lighting.

It is worth noting that the power consumption of LED luminaires is almost useless on the total power consumption figure.
